Conor McGregor: Early life

Conor Anthony McGregor was born in Crumlin, Dublin to Tony and Margaret McGregor. Although it is hard to imagine, McGregor started his sporting journey as a footballer rather than a MMA aspirant.

McGregor’s first encounter with the world of combat sports was when he began boxing at 12, in a bid to defend himself against bullies. Then, further down the road, McGregor met future UFC colleague Tom Egan, with whom started training MMA together.

Conor McGregor: Mixed Martial Arts career

The Irishman made his MMA debut in 2007. McGregor fought Kieran Campbell in an Irish MMA promotion, Ring of Truth, in 2007. In what was the only amateur fight of his MMA career, McGregor knocked his opponent out cold in the 1st round of their bout.

Conor McGregor: Professional career

McGregor then made his professional debut as a lightweight in 2008. The Irishman made waves in the European MMA scene and finally found himself in Britain’s biggest promotion, The Cage Warriors.

There he set up an 8 fight winning streak. In the same time frame, he became the Cage Warriors featherweight and lightweight double champion, the first European to do so.

McGregor’s journey in the UFC is nothing but a fairy tale. He finished Marcus Brimage via knockout in his debut in 2013.

After that, ‘The Notorious’ dominated the featherweight division by beating the featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, in 13 seconds. Moreover, he became the first two-division champion in UFC history by beating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the UFC lightweight title.

Then, he went up against undefeated UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in what was one of the ugliest sagas of his UFC career and lost.

McGregor was on a hiatus after UFC 229 and returned with a bang against UFC staple Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in the welterweight division. McGregor won the fight in the first round via TKO.

After the Cerrone fight, McGregor re-ignited his feud with former rival Dustin Poirier, whom he once defeated in 2014. McGregor fought Poirier at UFC 257 and lost the bout via a KO in the second round. The Irishman asked for a immediate rematch and was granted his wish.

UFC 264 witnessed McGregor returning for a third bout against Poirier, however, McGregor lost this match as well after he sustained a leg injury.

After UFC 264, ‘The Notorious’ has been focused on recovery but made waves in the UFC community when he announced that he will be returning in 2022 and this time he has his eyes on the welterweight strap currently held by ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman.
