Just so you know, any pending investments that haven’t begun processing will be canceled when your account is closed. Investments that have begun processing can’t be canceled but will be liquidated and transferred to your linked checking account once they finish processing. You can check the Recent Activity screen to see if there are any processing investments.

Once you request to close your account, your funds will be liquidated and returned to your linked checking account in 3-6 business days.

Important tax information

Please keep in mind, we may send you a 1099 form for your investment activity. Most investors get one. We’ll let you know if we’re sending one when it gets closer to tax season, or you can check for it here during the next calendar year.

Acorns is not authorized to provide tax advice for customers. If you would like to know more about the tax implications of an Acorns account, we suggest speaking with a tax advisor. IRS requirements dictate that we must provide a 1099 for accounts that meet certain criteria. Whether or not you file the 1099 is up to you and your tax advisor.

In the future, if you would like to reopen your account, we would welcome you back with open arms. You simply just need to login to your closed Acorns account and prompt the reopening of the account. That information can also be found here.

Important notes:

  • You’ll need a verified checking account linked to your Acorns account so that we can transfer your money when closing your account.
  • If you are closing the Acorns Later IRA account, the IRS requires you to withdraw all the money from retirement accounts before you can close one. Once that withdrawal fully processes, then we’ll review everything and process your account closure request.
