Thomas Rhett was born Thomas Rhett Akins, Jr. on March 30, 1990 to country singer Rhett Akins. Rhett, who grew up listening to Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, didn’t seriously start considering following in his father’s footsteps until his senior year in high school. After high school, he went to college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. There, he played as a member of Tau Phi for their cowboy show and for frat parties, where he got used to the crowd.
Just two years into his college career, Rhett inked a publishing deal with EMI and released a song called “I Ain’t Ready to Quit” on fellow country rocker Jason Aldean‘s 2010 release, “My Kind of Party“. He then signed a recording contract with Big Machine Records’ Valory Music Group division in 2011. In early 2012, he released his debut single, “Something to Do with My Hands”, followed later that year by “Beer with Jesus”. Both songs made it to the top 30 on the Hot Country Songs charts. His third single, “It Goes Like This”, topped the Country Airplay chart and also peaked at No. 2 on the Hot Country Songs.
His debut album, also titled “It Goes Like This”, was released in October that year. The album’s fourth single, “Get Me Some of That”, became Rhett’s second No. 1 single in early 2014. The album’s fifth single, “Make Me Wanna”, was released to country radio on August 4, 2014. It reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart on March 7, 2015. In between the two singles, Rhett sang guest vocals along with Justin Moore on Brantley Gilbert‘s “Small Town Throwdown”.
Rhett has also worked with other country’s big names like Lee Brice and Florida Georgia Line. His second album, “Tangled Up”, was released in September 2015 and spawned some hits including “Die a Happy Man” and “Crash and Burn”. The album reached No.1 on the Country Airplay chart in the same month.
“Crash and Burn” which served as the lead single was released in September 2014. The second single, “Die a Happy Man”, blasted to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, Hot Country Songs and Canada Country chart in December 2015 and January 2016. It even stayed atop Country Airplay chart for eight consecutive weeks. The third single, “T-Shirt”, reached the peak of Country Airplay in June 2016, but it was given mixed reviews due to its lyrics.
“Die a Happy Man” is a song written by Rhett for his wife who was also his childhood sweetheart, Lauren Gregory. They have been married since 2012 and are currently expecting their first baby as they’re still in a process of adopting a child from Africa. The song was nominated in the Best Country Song category at the 2016 American Music Awards and the 2017 Grammy Awards.
In February 2017, Rhett began his “Home Team Tour” which would visit some cities throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Kelsea Bellerini, Russell Dickerson, Ryan Hurd are some of the special guests who will perform during the tour. The tour is set to end in November 2017.
In March 2017, Rhett was honored with Country Artist of the Year at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards. He defeated the likes of Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban and Luke Bryan. He was also nominated in the Country Song of the Year category for his single “T-shirt”. In addition, Rhett took the stage at the award-giving event to perform “Star of the Show”.
Rhett was among the biggest winners at the 2017 Academy of Country Music Awards, which was held on April 2. He nabbed Male Vocalist of the Year Award, and his hit song “Die a Happy Man” was named Song of the Year. At the award-giving event, he also took the stage with Maren Morris to perform a new song titled “Craving You” which is a lead single off his upcoming album. In April 2017 during Q&A session at Outnumber Hunger Event, Rhett confirmed that his father, Rhett Akins, and pop star Selena Gomez will be featured on his forthcoming project.
