Back in the day when folks were still tracking down weed from a local “salesman,” the “eighth” was a known bit of terminology. Marijuana legalization has changed how people get their fave smoke to toke, but some old habits are worth keeping around. If you walk into a legal dispensary or browse an online menu, you’re no doubt going to see or hear about the good old eighths.
For familiar buyers, it’s all good—they understand the lingo. But recreational weed shops have brought inexperienced buyers out in search of their own green experiences. If that happens to be you, you may have any number of questions: What’s an eighth? How much is an eighth of weed? How much does an eighth of weed actually weigh and how much weed is that? Don’t worry, it’s really not as complicated as it sounds.

So, how much is an eighth of weed by weight?
Simply stated, an eighth of weed by weight is an eighth of an ounce. For reference, an empty soda can weighs about half an ounce. By grams, an eighth of an ounce comes in at about 3.5 grams, which is just a bit more than your average penny that weighs 3 grams.

How much weed is an eighth? This should help put it into perspective…
With just the weight explanation, you may be thinking, “Wow, that must not be much weed at all.” However, you have to consider that once cannabis is cultivated, cured, and ready for market, it’s surprising how much it takes to make a single gram.
There’s always a range in size because strains can have varied textures, resin concentrations, and shapes. Some weed packs together nicely into a little nugget, some is fluffy, and some falls somewhere between. For instance, a good Girl Scout Cookies eighth may be tighter packed than Silver Kush. In general terms, an eighth is going to give you about enough to roll two or three good blunts, so it really is a good amount.
How much for an eighth of weed? As in, how much should it cost?
Believe it or not, “How much for an eighth of weed?” is something we get asked a lot. After all, this is perhaps one of the most popular flower weights buyers are looking to buy. The answer can vary with us depending on the strain and a few other factors. Prices can range between $45 and $55 per eighth depending on the strain, and some strains can climb higher or fall lower depending on supply and demand.
Prices can always fluctuate depending on where you buy and how long weed’s been legal in your state. For example, in Southern California, the prices for an eighth can range anywhere between $33 and $44. California has one of the largest markets for legal cannabis anywhere on the planet. Once you get out into other less-weed-progressive states, prices tend to be higher. Florida and Massachusetts are states with slowly emerging (and in high-demand) markets, so average overall prices for an eighth have been hovering close to $48.
